Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for performing echocardiograms utilizing diagnostic ultrasound equipment. Performs examinations according to established cardiologist's protocol. Applies knowledge of imaging technique, anatomy, physiology, and pathologic disorders. Works in a hospital environment serving outpatient, as well as inpatient exams in most hospital settings. Participates with Cardiologist and/or physician by contributing technical and professional knowledge. 2. Clinical and Technical: a. Know and understand Hospital, Departmental, and examination protocols. b. Working knowledge of equipment, how to 'trouble shoot' equipment, and when repairs are necessary how to contact the appropriate vendor. c. Know how to do QA on films and on equipment. d. Know how to schedule examinations. Review daily scheduled exams for corrections/additions/cancellations. e. Make sure exams are completed to include Teleradiology of films. f. Infection control principles. g. Problem solving skills. 3. Reviews pathology, surgical and delivery reports, as appropriate, to follow patients progress and provide a means of reviewing the accuracy of the diagnostic exam. 4. Appropriate utilization of transducers and image optimization techniques. 5. Appropriate technique for the use of pulsed wave, continuous wave, and color flow doppler. 6. Performs examinations according to generally accepted, ASE guided, protocol. 7. Appropriate images are acquired. 8. Appropriate patient positioning is utilized per exam requirements and patient comfort. 9. Recognition of anatomic structures and ability to recognize pathology-physiology. 10. Ability to judge whether or not to deviate from standard protocols. 11. Responds to patient needs and maintains patient confidentiality according to HIPAA regulations. 12. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 13. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics. 14. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures as well as labor agreements. 15. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values. 16. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization. 17. Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards. WORK ENVIRONMENT The professional in the position reports to the Diagnostic Imaging Director. This position works closely with the Diagnostic Imaging team and other departments in order to provide complete patient care. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE • Education: a. Associate of Applied Science degree of Noninvasive Cardiovascular Technology. • Certification/Registration: a. Registered Cardiovascular Technologist or Sonographer through an accredited and nationally recognized institution. • Experience: a. Minimum 600 hours clinical experience. • Skills/Competencies: a. Demonstrates competency on equipment listed on department specific checklist. b. Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction, when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate. c. Performs actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercises safe judgment in decision-making. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines. d. Demonstrates competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum. e. Current (Healthcare Provider [HCP] level) CPR certification or completed within three (3) months of hire. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Moderate lifting (50 lbs), frequent/prolonged standing/walking. 2. Lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transfers patients. 3. Pushing, moving, pulling heavy equipment. 4. Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. 5. Good reading eyesight. 6. Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
