Holiday RTO: Requests will be considered but are not guaranteed.
The PCU serves as a step-down unit from the ICU, maintaining a 3:1 nurse-to-patient ratio for closer monitoring of patients transitioning from intensive care who do not require telemetry-level care.
RNs should have experience in an ICU step-down or PCU setting, with training in telemetry and high-risk medications.
Unit: PCU/Step-down (Critical Care Step-down)
Number of Beds: 14 beds (7 rooms)
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: 1:3
Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS
Common Diagnoses/Patient Types: Step-down patients from ICU, TBI/trauma patients, major surgeries, CEA, sepsis
Must-Have Skills/Experience: Proficiency in arterial and CVP pressure lines, titrating pressors, Precedex, and care for tracheostomy and stable vented patients.
Drip Titration: Yes, RNs are required to titrate drips.
Common Titrated/Set Rate Drips: Precedex, dopamine, dobutamine, Levophed.
Nurse Aides: Typically 1 aide for all 14 beds.
Shifts & Scheduling: 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM/PM; 3 shifts per week. Schedules are created 2-3 weeks in advance initially, with a goal of scheduling up to 9 weeks ahead. Self-scheduling is primarily allowed.
Weekend Requirements: 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule (Days: Sat/Sun; Nights: Fri/Sat).
Holiday Requirements: Included in permanent staff rotation.
Call/Standby Requirement: No.
Floating Requirements: First to float; may float to Telemetry or MedSurg.
Scrub Color/Dress Code: Navy blue.
Unit/Department Specific Orientation: 1 shift on the unit.
Additional Notes:
Candidates should have 2-3 years of experience in the specialty; first-time travelers are welcome. The unit is busy with quick patient turnover, emphasizing the importance of patient experience. Knowledge of HCAHPS and core measures is essential, along with a commitment to the unit’s mission and values. Self-motivation and teamwork are key attributes, and the environment is very traveler-friendly, fostering a close-knit team atmosphere with effective collaboration.
